Commission members from Redeemer – St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and Pilgrim – Decatur, Illinois, along with Pr. Brock Abbott from Pilgrim, attended the fall General Meeting of the United Lutheran Mission Association (ULMA). Our mission churches were represented by Rev. James Shaw from Agnus Dei Lutheran Church in Virginia, Rev. William C. Mack from Christ the Rock Lutheran Church in California, and, via teleconference on Saturday, Rev. James Behling and Patrick Schiefelbein from Sola Scriptura in Wisconsin.
The two-day event was hosted again at the Holiday Inn Hotel in the Cincinnati suburb of Erlanger, Kentucky. We met there in the spring and found the facilities and amenities very well suited to our needs. The closed session of the Commission members took place the afternoon of Friday, October 7th, followed by fellowship in the hotel restaurant. The general meeting began the following morning.
Written reports from all three missions were presented, followed by a review and discussion period. All of the missions have continued with their outreach efforts. Each has found that personal contact with friends and family is the most productive. They did not appear to experience any downturn in attendance during the summer months.
Christ the Rock attempted to start a second location. After two services on Sunday evenings in September it was decided to discontinue until another time. Agnus Dei had to temporarily relocate their services in late August when the earthquake near Mineral, Virginia, caused some damage to the facilities where they hold their worship services. They have since returned to that location.
Each mission keeps their eyes and ears open for other ways to reach out to their respective communities. Getting involved in civic events and volunteer positions has provided inroads to sharing the Gospel.
